Isle of Man TT: Ben and Tom Birchall set the first 120mph sidecar lap at the TT
Posted : 11 June 2023
TT racer Dave Molyneux expressed his awe at witnessing the historic moment of the first-ever 120mph sidecar lap at the Isle of Man TT, especially since it coincided with the centenary of the class.
Ben and Tom Birchall set this remarkable record during the first race of the 2023 event, and they went on to break it again in the second race. This achievement stands in stark contrast to the modest top speeds of 50mph reached by Freddie Dixon and Walter Denny in the inaugural race back in 1923.
Molyneux, a 17-time TT winner, acknowledged the radical development that has taken place in the sidecar class over the years. He pointed out advancements in tire technology, brakes, engines, and even fuel, all contributing to improved performance and subsequently higher speeds. He described the Birchall brothers' phenomenal lap at over 120mph as something truly special, especially considering it occurred on the 100th anniversary of the event.
Recalling previous milestones, Molyneux highlighted the significance of the first 100mph lap in the sidecar class, achieved in 1977. He also mentioned his own accomplishments of setting the first 110mph lap record in 1996 and the first 115mph lap in 2005.
Regarding the latest record-breaking achievement, Molyneux admitted that aiming for the first 120mph lap might have been a bit ambitious for him at his age. Nevertheless, he expressed his sheer delight and emphasized the significance of this feat being accomplished within 100 years of the event, describing it as nothing short of fantastic.
