In a significant move, former Ferrari strategy head Inaki Rueda has joined Sauber as the new sporting director, marking a reunion with his former boss, Mattia Binotto. Sauber, which is set to transition into the Audi factory team by 2026, made the announcement on Wednesday in anticipation of the Brazilian Grand Prix at the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo.
Rueda will succeed Beat Zehnder, who has been a key figure at Sauber since the 1980s and will now focus on the heritage aspect of the company. In his new role, Rueda will oversee all sporting activities, including managing the team's relationship with the FIA and handling regulatory matters trackside, as stated by the Swiss-based team.
Additionally, the team has welcomed back Giampaolo Dall'Ara, previously the head of track engineering, who returns as the head of race engineering after running his own consultancy. Binotto, who started at Sauber in August after a long tenure at Ferrari, serves as the Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer, while Jonathan Wheatley is expected to join as principal from Red Bull next year.
