Hungarian Grand Prix: Hamilton express frustration with Mercedes' 16th-fastest time
Posted : 22 July 2023
Lewis Hamilton expressed frustration with his Mercedes car's performance as he achieved the 16th-fastest time during Friday practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The new tyre allocation approach implemented for this race limited the number of tyre sets available to drivers, leading to concerns from both Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
Charles Leclerc from Ferrari set the fastest pace, but the day offered few clues regarding the true competitive picture due to the changes in tyre allocation.
The 'alternative tyre allocation' aims to reduce tyre usage for sustainability reasons, decreasing the number of sets from 13 to 11 and modifying their distribution across three compounds.
Teams used fewer sets of tyres during Friday practice due to the new format. Hamilton voiced his discontent, stating that the changes resulted in less running time and was not an ideal adjustment. Verstappen also expressed disappointment, explaining that the limited tyre usage affected their preparation.
Lando Norris from McLaren, who secured the second-fastest time, acknowledged that the wet weather in the first session was a saving grace, as it allowed more teams to perform.
Despite his car feeling subpar during the practice, Hamilton remains hopeful, referencing a similar situation last year when adjustments led to better performance. The teams will continue working on their setups to improve their chances for the upcoming race.
