Henk Lategan Takes Overall Lead After Nani Roma's Dakar Stage Victory

Posted : 16 January 2025

South African Henk Lategan reclaimed the lead in the overall standings after the 10th stage of the Dakar Rally on Wednesday, despite Spain's Nani Roma taking the stage win. Roma, driving for Ford, completed the 120km special from Haradh to Shubaytah in 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 34 seconds, marking Ford's first Dakar stage victory since 2015.

Brazil’s Lucas Moraes finished second, 18 seconds behind, while Saudi Arabia's Dania Akeel rounded out the podium in third place, 1 minute 40 seconds behind Roma.

Roma, a two-time Dakar winner, expressed his satisfaction with the result, acknowledging the difficulty of the rally. "We tried to have a clean day, and this morning we were so fast," Roma said. "The car is good, a really strong car, and we are happy with how the team works." His performance was a testament to both his skill and the team’s perseverance throughout the challenging rally.

Overnight leader Yazeed al-Rajhi, representing Saudi Arabia in the Overdrive team, encountered difficulties during the stage, becoming stuck in the sand and losing valuable time. This setback allowed Lategan, driving for Toyota, to seize the overall lead.

Lategan now holds a 2-minute and 27-second advantage over Rajhi in the general classification. Lategan admitted his strategy was to maintain a steady pace rather than push for speed, but his position puts him in a favorable spot for the remainder of the race.

As the rally heads into Thursday's 11th stage, known as the Empty Quarter Challenge, the competition is expected to intensify. The stage features a 275km special around Shubaytah, with treacherous gravel and sand terrain that could drastically shift the standings.

Meanwhile, in the motorbike category, Australia's Daniel Sanders has extended his lead to over 16 minutes, while the stage win on Wednesday went to South Africa's Michael Docherty, who completed the stage in 2 hours and 3 seconds. Docherty, based in the UAE, expressed his joy in returning to the dunes, where he felt most at home.
