Hendrick Motorsports has accepted the disqualification of Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet, following post-race inspections at the Charlotte Roval. The deadline to appeal the disqualification, set for Monday, passed without any challenge from Hendrick Motorsports.
Bowman's disqualification resulted from his car failing to meet the minimum weight requirement after the race, a penalty that cost him a place in the Cup Series playoffs' Round of 8. Hendrick vice chairman Jeff Gordon commented on the situation, stating that Bowman's team had "cut it too close" regarding the car's weight.
Gordon elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the disqualification during an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. He noted the significant contact that occurred during the race, which prompted a thorough inspection of the car to assess any potential damage.
NASCAR conducted a detailed examination of the vehicle at their tech centre the following day and ultimately determined that the car was simply below the required weight threshold. Gordon explained that the team's approach of trying to maximize performance within the weight limits sometimes leads to such close calls, acknowledging that in this instance, they missed the mark.
Had Bowman's results remained intact, Hendrick Motorsports would have had all four of its drivers qualify for the Round of 8, alongside Kyle Larson, William Byron, and Chase Elliott, who continue to compete for the championship.
Gordon expressed disappointment over the situation, stating that it was "embarrassing" and "disappointing" to lose a significant opportunity after what appeared to be a thrilling day at the track, especially given that it was a home race for the team. He emphasized that after reviewing the facts, the team did not find sufficient grounds for an appeal and has decided to move forward.
Despite the setback, Gordon praised Bowman and his team for their performance throughout the season. He expressed hope that they would use this disappointment as motivation to gather points in the upcoming rounds and continue building momentum for future races. With Bowman's disqualification, Joey Logano has secured the eighth and final playoff spot in the next round.
