Hamilton takes blame for Qatar Grand Prix collision with teammate Russell

Lewis Hamilton took full responsibility for a collision with his Mercedes teammate, George Russell, during the Qatar Grand Prix. Hamilton attempted to overtake Russell and race leader Max Verstappen on the outside but admitted it was entirely his fault. Russell appreciated Hamilton's apology, emphasizing that incidents in racing involve two people.
The incident occurred when Hamilton miscalculated a corner, and Russell couldn't move inside due to Verstappen's presence beside him. Hamilton's right rear wheel made contact with Russell's left front, resulting in both cars spinning off the track. Hamilton retired from the race, while Russell managed to continue and finished fourth.
Hamilton's desire to progress was heightened by his soft-compound tire choice, different from Verstappen and Russell's medium tires. They had initially planned for Hamilton to pass Russell early in the race before Hamilton's pit stop on lap eight.
Both drivers stressed that the incident would not damage their relationship. Hamilton affirmed their strong relationship and stated they would discuss the matter offline. Russell echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that their goal is to secure second place in the constructors' championship, and the incident was not intentional.
Despite the collision, Russell finished ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, and Mercedes leads Ferrari by 28 points in the team's championship with five races remaining.
