Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets ahead of Lando Norris in Thursday's late-night second free practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, while Max Verstappen, aiming for a fourth consecutive world title, struggled with grip on the track. Hamilton recorded a best lap of 1:33.825 in his Mercedes, narrowly edging out Norris by just 0.011 seconds, with his teammate George Russell securing third place.
Norris is still fighting to keep his slim title hopes alive, but Verstappen had a difficult session, finishing over two seconds behind the leader. The reigning champion currently leads Norris by 62 points, and with three Grands Prix remaining, he will secure the title on Saturday if he finishes ahead of Norris or holds a 60-point advantage.
Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc claimed the fourth and fifth spots, respectively, while Alpine's Pierre Gasly, Kevin Magnussen of Haas, and Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren rounded out the top ten. Verstappen, on mediums, finished a disappointing 17th, while his teammate Sergio Perez was 19th, as Red Bull continued to struggle for grip.
The session was interrupted by a red flag with 21 minutes remaining when Alex Albon of Williams stopped on track due to fuel system issues, causing a six-minute delay. Ferrari and Red Bull switched to longer runs in race simulation mode after the red flag, and Hamilton's performance marked a much-needed return to form following a challenging result in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
