Lewis Hamilton is set to make his Ferrari debut at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, where he aims to challenge reigning world champion Max Verstappen. The seven-time champion, who left Mercedes after 12 years, hopes to end his title drought since 2020 and secure an unprecedented eighth world title.
Hamilton is eager to translate his Bahrain testing experience into strong race performance, expressing enthusiasm for Ferrari’s potential. His last victory at Melbourne’s Albert Park was in 2015, while Ferrari has enjoyed recent success, including Carlos Sainz’s 2024 win.
Verstappen, who failed to finish last year’s race due to a brake fire, remains cautious about Red Bull’s chances in Melbourne. The Dutchman, seeking a fifth consecutive title, believes McLaren has the strongest form based on Bahrain testing.
Red Bull's new driver, Liam Lawson, replaces the ousted Sergio Perez, joining five other rookies on the grid, including Jack Doohan, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Oliver Bearman, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Isack Hadjar. Doohan, son of MotoGP legend Mick Doohan, will have home support as he debuts for Alpine.
McLaren, coming off their first team title since 1998, is expected to be strong in Australia, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri aiming for podium finishes. Norris, who had a solid test in Bahrain, remains optimistic but anticipates tighter competition among teams beyond the traditional front-runners of Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren. The Australian Grand Prix returns to its traditional role as the season opener for the first time since 2019, with over 450,000 fans expected at Albert Park.
