Hamilton pushes for car improvements as Mercedes acknowledges need for change
Posted : 23 September 2023
Lewis Hamilton expressed his frustration with the performance of his Mercedes team at the Japanese Grand Prix, where he qualified in seventh place, a significant distance behind Max Verstappen's pole position.
Hamilton acknowledged that he knows the issues with the car but emphasized that he can only advocate for changes; the responsibility for designing and implementing those changes lies with his team.
Hamilton plans to visit the Mercedes wind tunnel to evaluate whether the necessary adjustments are being made. He has consistently criticized the car's design direction, which differs from Red Bull's and has caused problems with rear grip, balance, and overall performance.
Hamilton stated that the lack of rear downforce affects tire temperatures and grip, making it challenging to maintain control.
Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin, speaking on behalf of team principal Toto Wolff, who was absent from the race, admitted that Mercedes needed significant changes for next season.
Shovlin mentioned that they were working on various projects to address handling issues and instability. He emphasized that both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell provided valuable feedback on the car's weaknesses and that Mercedes was open to making substantial alterations to improve performance.
Despite the challenges Mercedes faces, both Hamilton and the team are committed to making necessary changes to compete at a higher level in the future.
