George Russell Voices Concerns as FIA Faces Leadership Turmoil After Robert Reid Resigns

Posted : 11 April 2025

Mercedes driver George Russell has raised concerns over ongoing instability within Formula One's governing body following the resignation of Robert Reid, the FIA’s deputy president for sport. Reid, a former rally co-driver and key member of FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s leadership team, stepped down amid disagreements over governance reforms.

Russell, who serves as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, said Reid had shared a letter explaining his decision, and expressed disappointment over the persistent turbulence at the organization.

The fallout between Reid and Sulayem came after clashes with David Richards, head of Motorsport UK, regarding proposed changes to the FIA statutes. While Sulayem is expected to seek another term as president in December, questions around leadership and transparency have intensified.

Russell noted that frequent upheavals had become commonplace and disheartening, suggesting that previous efforts by drivers to engage with FIA leadership had yielded little progress in addressing structural issues.

Reid’s departure follows that of former FIA chief executive Natalie Robyn, highlighting a broader trend of senior exits. In his resignation, Reid criticized decision-making processes that lacked transparency and accountability, stating that the FIA was deviating from its foundational values.

The FIA responded by thanking Reid for his service and maintaining that its governance systems remain robust. Meanwhile, Richards, who has publicly questioned the direction of the FIA, is expected to meet with officials during the Bahrain Grand Prix as tensions continue to mount.
