Sauber announced on Wednesday that Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto will join the team for the 2025 Formula One season, partnering with Nico Hulkenberg. Bortoleto, who currently leads the Formula 2 standings, will replace Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, both of whom are set to leave the team at the end of this season. Bortoleto, who is also part of the McLaren junior program, expressed his excitement about joining Sauber, calling it "one of the exciting projects in motorsport," especially as the team prepares for its future as Audi's official entry in 2026.
Bottas and Zhou have struggled in 2024, with neither driver scoring points in the championship so far. Sauber confirmed their departures following discussions with both drivers, stating that conditions to continue together were no longer viable. The team thanked both drivers for their professionalism and contributions over the past three years, acknowledging their roles in supporting Sauber’s growth during challenging times.
The futures of Bottas and Zhou remain uncertain. Bottas, 35, has expressed interest in a return to Mercedes as a reserve driver if he is not retained by Sauber, while Zhou, 25, is exploring other opportunities in Formula 1. Zhou made history as China’s first F1 driver and indicated he is actively pursuing options to remain in the sport.
