Franco Morbidelli Leads Free Practice at Indonesia MotoGP

Posted : 27 September 2024

Italian rider Franco Morbidelli delivered an impressive performance in the morning free practice session at the Indonesia MotoGP, securing the top spot with a lap time of 1:30.689. His Pramac teammate and championship leader, Jorge Martin, finished the session in third place, trailing behind Aprilia's Maverick Vinales, who recorded a time just 0.221 seconds slower than Morbidelli. The humid conditions at the Mandalika track on Lombok Island set the stage for competitive racing.

As the title race heats up, Martin leads the standings with a 24-point advantage over defending champion Francesco Bagnaia, who struggled in the first practice session, finishing in a disappointing 14th place. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta of Spain took fourth place, while France's Johann Zarco rounded out the top five. Bagnaia's teammate, Enea Bastianini, and Gresini's Marc Marquez are positioned further behind, sitting 59 and 60 points off the leader, respectively, after finishing eighth and sixth in their sessions.

Last weekend, Martin further solidified his lead over Bagnaia when the Italian crashed out of the Emilia-Romagna MotoGP. The second practice session is set to begin at 3:00 PM local time (0700 GMT), with the top 10 riders advancing directly to Saturday's second round of qualifying. This qualifying round will determine the grid for both the sprint race on Saturday and the main GP event on Sunday, where a maximum of 37 points are up for grabs.
