Defending world champion Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati clinched victory in the Italian MotoGP sprint at Mugello on Saturday, finishing ahead of Spanish riders Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta.
World championship leader Jorge Martin crashed and did not finish this seventh sprint of the 20 MotoGP races, yet he maintains a 27-point lead over Bagnaia in the current standings. Italian Franco Morbidelli of Ducati-Pramac achieved a surprising fourth place, followed by Spaniard Maverick Vinales of Aprilia and South African Brad Binder of KTM.
Completing the top 10 were Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio of Ducati-VR46, Spaniards Alex Marquez of Ducati-Gresini, Aleix Espargaro of Aprilia, and Raul Fernandez of Aprilia-Trackhouse.
Bagnaia, cheered on by tens of thousands of tifosi supporters, won the sprint at a track where he has triumphed in the past two years. Despite topping the practice times, Bagnaia was penalized three places on the grid for Sunday’s full GP for impeding Alex Marquez.
