Francesco Bagnaia Claims Victory in Thai MotoGP

Posted : 27 October 2024

Francesco Bagnaia triumphed in the Thai MotoGP under challenging wet conditions on Sunday, narrowing the gap to championship leader Jorge Martin, who finished in second place. With only two race weekends remaining, Martin's lead over the defending champion has been reduced from 22 points to 17, setting the stage for an intense showdown at the upcoming Sepang race in Malaysia.

Pedro Acosta secured third place at Buriram, but the spotlight remained on the title race between Martin and Bagnaia, now clearly a two-horse contest likely to go down to the wire. Following the Malaysian race, the season will conclude with a finale in Valencia from November 15 to 17.

Martin, competing for his first world title, expressed satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the remarkable speed both he and Bagnaia displayed even in difficult conditions.

Bagnaia expressed gratitude to his Ducati team for their support in keeping his championship hopes alive. After starting on pole, he initially lost the lead to Martin but quickly regained it as Marc Marquez pursued him.

However, Marquez's aggressive attempt to overtake led to a crash, allowing Bagnaia to focus on securing his crucial ninth victory of the season. In the earlier sprint race on Saturday, Bagnaia finished third, trailing Martin, while Enea Bastianini, his Ducati teammate, took the win.

In Moto2, Japan's Ai Ogura was crowned world champion after finishing second in a red-flagged race won by Spain's Aron Canet, with Ogura set to move up to MotoGP next season.
