Francesco Bagnaia triumphed at the Japan MotoGP on Sunday, narrowing the championship gap to front-runner Jorge Martin to just 10 points with four races left in the season. The Italian defending champion made a strong start, overtaking pole-sitter Pedro Acosta on the first lap at the Motegi circuit and maintaining his lead throughout the race. Bagnaia finished with a comfortable margin of 1.189 seconds ahead of Martin, who secured second place, while Marc Marquez rounded out the podium in third.
Bagnaia's victory marked his eighth Grand Prix win of the season, a personal best for the Italian rider. He also claimed victory in Saturday's sprint race, leaving Japan 11 points closer to Martin than he was at the beginning of the weekend. This win was particularly significant for Bagnaia as it marked his first victory at the Japan MotoGP, further solidifying his position as a top contender in the championship race.
Jorge Martin faced a challenging start, having qualified 11th on the grid due to a crash during qualifying. Despite this setback, he quickly maneuvered through the field, moving up to fourth place by the end of the first lap. After Acosta crashed out two laps into the race, Martin found himself in second place, closing the gap to Bagnaia to under a second in the final laps. However, Bagnaia's pace proved too strong for Martin to overcome.
Meanwhile, Acosta, who started on pole for the first time in his MotoGP career, struggled after crashing out while chasing Bagnaia. Enea Bastianini finished fourth, maintaining his position in third place in the overall standings, just two points ahead of Marquez. Franco Morbidelli secured fifth place, while Brad Binder finished sixth. Maverick Vinales, who had a promising start from third on the grid, also faced disappointment after crashing during the race.
