Francesco Bagnaia claims Jorge Martin can only lose title

Posted : 02 November 2024

Francesco Bagnaia faced a significant setback in the MotoGP Malaysia sprint race when he crashed, which opened the door for Jorge Martin to potentially secure his first championship title this weekend. With Martin currently holding a 29-point lead over Bagnaia, the stakes are high as they approach Sunday’s Grand Prix. Bagnaia acknowledged that the championship is now in Martin's hands to lose, while he and his Ducati team are determined to put up a strong fight to challenge for the title.

Martin took charge of the race from the start, capitalizing on Bagnaia's misfortune when the Italian crashed out on the third lap. This victory was crucial for Martin, as it widened his championship lead, and he now requires just nine additional points in the upcoming race to clinch his first MotoGP title. Bagnaia has experienced a series of crashes in various sprint races throughout the season, including notable incidents at the British, Spanish, and Catalunya Grands Prix. Following the race in Malaysia, he expressed his disappointment, stating that his Ducati Lenovo team “need something more” to be competitive.

Bagnaia emphasized the need for additional support in the title race, suggesting that the only competitor who can truly lose the championship at this point is Jorge Martin. He noted the importance of assistance from other riders, saying, “We need something in the middle, a little help from the others, and I will try to win.” He reflected on his racing strategy for the season, which initially aimed to improve his performance on Saturdays. Unfortunately, this approach has resulted in a gap that Martin has been able to exploit.

In his analysis of the crash, Bagnaia revealed that he was overly cautious during the second lap after pushing hard in the first. “I told myself to break a bit afterward to avoid risks, but I ended up crashing,” he explained. The moment he lost control was when he hit a bump on corner nine, which caused him to lose the front end of his bike. This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of racing, where even minor miscalculations can lead to significant consequences.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s race, Bagnaia assured that his strategy would remain unchanged, focusing on delivering his best performance. “We need to be focused for tomorrow, and my approach will not change,” he stated. He plans to give it his all in the race, striving for victory despite the current circumstances. Bagnaia also expressed hope that his competitors, Marc Marquez and Enea Bastianini, would enhance their performance to add some unpredictability to the race.

Marc Marquez, who finished second in the sprint race, expressed sympathy for Bagnaia's predicament. The six-time MotoGP champion acknowledged that the pressure of competition could lead to mistakes, noting that Bagnaia was compelled to take risks after facing challenges in the race’s early laps. “Pecco must take the risk, and I saw he was struggling a bit in those first two laps,” Marquez commented, highlighting the difficulties that all riders face when the pressure is on.

As the championship race intensifies, both Bagnaia and Martin will be under significant pressure during the final race of the season. With the potential for a first title on the line for Martin, the upcoming Grand Prix promises to be a thrilling showdown. Bagnaia’s determination to challenge Martin, combined with the support of his team, will be crucial as they aim to reclaim their position in the championship standings. The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the MotoGP season, where every point will count.
