Formula 1: Wolff says the Mercedes improvement won't be a "silver bullet"

Posted : 25 May 2023
According to team chief Toto Wolff, Mercedes' significant vehicle improvement for this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix won't be a "silver bullet."

It is the outcome of Mercedes' decision to alter their design philosophy following a poor start to the second season.

The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola was postponed last weekend due to floods in northern Italy, where Mercedes had planned to utilise it.

Wolff acknowledged that Monaco's special characteristics—the circuit is the slowest on the schedule and is renowned for being narrow, winding, and bumpy—meant it would be challenging to predict how well the new design would perform.

"We need to be careful not to draw too many conclusions from this one event," Wolff said. "We are introducing the first step in a new development direction.

"It won't be a silver bullet; from my experience, they do not exist in our sport. We hope that it gives the drivers a more stable and predictable platform. Then we can build on that in the weeks and months ahead.

"F1 is tough competition and a meritocracy. We are not where we want to be but there's no sense of entitlement. It's just about hard work to get us to the front."
