Formula 1 is considering changes to the format of sprint races for the upcoming season, with a proposed plan that includes Friday qualifying, Saturday sprints, and then main grand prix qualifying. There's also discussion about potentially reversing parts of the grid for the sprint races.
Additionally, an extra cooling duct may be permitted to address concerns about heat exposure in extreme conditions. The changes aim to address the confusion around the current sprint format and create a more engaging and meaningful sequence of events over the race weekend. Red Bull's Christian Horner expressed support for the evolution of sprints but emphasized the need to carefully assess the consequences of any changes, such as grid reversals.
The proposed adjustments were announced following a meeting of the F1 Commission during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Concerns about the current sprint system's effectiveness and the gap between qualifying and the main race prompted the consideration of these modifications.
The Commission provided "overall support" for the changes, and further discussions are scheduled for the next meeting in the new year. Other announced changes include additional testing of devices to reduce spray in wet weather, a focus on tire development to reduce overheating, and the abandonment of the planned ban on tire-heating blankets for 2025. There's also an agreement that teams cannot work on developing their cars for the 2026 technical regulations until the start of 2025.
