FIA Rejects Red Bull, Ferrari's Complaints Over McLaren and Mercedes Front Wings

Posted : 03 September 2024

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, has dismissed complaints from Red Bull and Ferrari regarding the legality of the front wings on McLaren and Mercedes cars. Both teams had expressed concerns that the front wings were flexing excessively, potentially violating the regulations. However, the FIA confirmed that all front wings currently comply with the 2024 rules, addressing the issue raised after the Italian Grand Prix.

The concerns from Red Bull and Ferrari were acknowledged by the FIA in response to statements made by Red Bull's Christian Horner, Helmut Marko, and Ferrari's Frederic Vasseur following the recent race. Horner noted that while the regulations are clear, it is ultimately up to the FIA to interpret and enforce them. Marko emphasized the need for a detailed analysis of the McLaren and Mercedes wings, while Vasseur preferred to discuss the matter privately with FIA officials.

Despite the complaints, neither Red Bull nor Ferrari has formally objected to the McLaren and Mercedes wings. The discussion around these wings comes amid increasing competitiveness from both McLaren and Mercedes, which has intensified pressure on Red Bull, the dominant team at the beginning of the season.

Max Verstappen, who has not secured a victory since the Spanish Grand Prix in June, admitted that the current state of both championships seems unrealistic. With an 62-point lead over McLaren's Lando Norris and eight races remaining, Verstappen remains ahead, but McLaren is closing the gap, trailing just eight points behind Red Bull in the constructors' standings.
