The FIA has imposed a combined fine of $1 million on Honda and Alpine for procedural violations related to the 2023 cost cap for engine manufacturers. According to the governing body of Formula One, Honda has been fined $600,000, while Alpine has received a $400,000 penalty. The FIA's investigation revealed that both entities had breached procedural guidelines but did not exceed the overall spending limit of $140.4 million.
The fines stemmed from an Accepted Breach Agreement (ABA) between the FIA, Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), and Alpine Racing SAS. The FIA stated that HRC failed to submit accurate reporting documentation for the required period, and Alpine did not include crucial information in its filings. In their findings, the FIA indicated that several mandatory procedures were either completely overlooked or only partially completed, although subsequent reports were submitted to address these issues.
Last month, Renault announced its decision to discontinue engine production in Formula One after the conclusion of the 2024 season due to financial considerations. This development means that the Alpine team is expected to switch to Mercedes engines starting in 2026, although a formal agreement has yet to be finalized.
As Honda prepares to partner with Aston Martin in 2026, the implications of these fines could influence both manufacturers' operations in the immediate future as they navigate their commitments in the competitive landscape of Formula One.
