FIA approves General Motors as F1 engine supplier from 2029

Posted : 23 April 2025

The newly-formed Cadillac F1 team has received approval to develop its own power unit starting in 2029. Backed by General Motors, the team will join the Formula 1 grid in 2026, initially relying on Ferrari for engine supply during its first three seasons. This expansion will bring the total number of teams on the grid to 11 from the next season onward.

Russ O'Blenes, the CEO of the Cadillac F1 team, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "With this approval from the FIA, we will continue to accelerate our efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid." This marks a significant step in the team’s journey toward developing its own engines.

As a result of Cadillac's entry, Formula 1 will feature six distinct engine suppliers from 2029, with General Motors joining Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda, Red Bull Powertrains-Ford, and Audi in supplying power units to the teams. This increase in engine suppliers is a sign of growing competition and technological advancement in the sport.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem shared his thoughts on the approval, emphasizing the significance of expanding the grid and introducing new talent and opportunities to Formula 1. "Over two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an eleventh team into the FIA Formula One World Championship, guided by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity to our sport," he said.

Sulayem also acknowledged the challenges faced during the process but expressed confidence in the progress made. "Although the process was at times challenging, the progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile," he added. The approval of General Motors as an engine supplier marks an important milestone for the sport.

The addition of GM Performance Power Units LLC. as an official power unit supplier for F1 starting in 2029 highlights the increasing global expansion of Formula 1 and the rising interest from top automotive manufacturers like General Motors. This move further underscores the sport's commitment to fostering innovation, sustainability, and competition.

The FIA’s ongoing efforts to make motorsport more accessible and inclusive globally are also reinforced by this partnership. The arrival of new manufacturers, the advancement of technology, and the connection with a wider, more diverse fan base all contribute to the evolving future of Formula 1.
