Ferrari, Mercedes React to Sudden Departure of F1 Race Director Nils Wittich

Posted : 22 November 2024

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur described the sudden departure of Formula One race director Nils Wittich as unusual, especially with the title-deciding races approaching. With Max Verstappen on the verge of securing his fourth consecutive championship and the constructors' battle heating up between McLaren and Ferrari, the timing of Wittich’s exit has raised questions. The announcement of his departure last week came with little explanation, leaving many in the sport to speculate about the reasons behind it.

Vasseur expressed his confusion about the timing of the decision, particularly given that the final races of the season—Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi—are critical and challenging. He acknowledged the strangeness of the situation but chose not to comment further, as he was not involved in the internal discussions within the FIA. He noted that the momentum of the decision felt off, given how crucial the remaining races are for both drivers and teams.

Mercedes' Toto Wolff also voiced concern about the instability caused by the sudden change, particularly after the controversy surrounding the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which saw Lewis Hamilton lose the title. Wolff emphasized that consistency and stability in race management were essential, especially with the championship on the line. In contrast, Alpine's Oliver Oakes expressed confidence in Rui Marques, who has been promoted from F2 to replace Wittich. Oakes believes Marques is well-prepared for the role, having earned the trust of those within the FIA.

Meanwhile, Martin Brundle, a former racer and Sky Sports commentator, described Wittich’s departure as difficult to understand, especially after reports suggested Wittich had not resigned but was, in fact, dismissed. Wittich himself confirmed he had not resigned, although he provided no further details. The FIA’s official statement indicated he left to "pursue new opportunities," but the lack of clarity surrounding the situation has left many puzzled, especially with such an important race ahead.
