Former Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has taken legal action against Formula One, filing a lawsuit in London's High Court, seeking damages for the 2008 world championship title he lost by a single point to Lewis Hamilton.
The lawsuit also includes proceedings against the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone, the sport's former chief. Massa alleges a breach of regulations by the FIA for failing to promptly investigate Nelson Piquet Junior's crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, claiming that proper action would have resulted in him winning the championship. The Brazilian driver is reportedly seeking £62 million ($80 million) in damages for financial losses and missed opportunities as a potential world champion.
The 2008 season saw the infamous "crashgate" scandal at the Singapore Grand Prix, where Renault ordered Nelson Piquet Jr to crash to benefit Fernando Alonso. Massa, leading at the time of Piquet's crash, finished 13th, losing the championship to Hamilton by the narrowest of margins. Massa's legal action contends that if the FIA had acted appropriately, he would have been declared the champion.
Felipe Massa's lawsuit targets Formula One, the FIA, and Bernie Ecclestone, claiming a breach of regulations and seeking damages for financial losses due to the failure to properly investigate the "crashgate" scandal. Massa aims to secure declarations that had the FIA acted promptly, he would have won the 2008 championship. The legal action also seeks to highlight Ecclestone and FOM's complicity in the FIA's failure.
Lewis Hamilton, who won the 2008 championship, commented last September on Massa's legal pursuit, stating that it's Massa's decision, and he prefers not to focus on the past. Massa is seeking £62 million in damages, reflecting the salary difference and missed opportunities as a world champion, according to reports.
