F1: McLaren demands legislation to increase sustainability
Posted : 18 May 2023
To make it simpler for teams to pursue sustainability, McLaren has advocated for amendments to the Formula 1 regulations.
F1's financial restriction, according to McLaren Racing chief Zak Brown, requires teams to balance sustainability and performance.
Any adjustments, he continued, would need to be prepared to avoid creating openings for unauthorised expenditure.
"There needs to be a way to define areas you can spend outside the cap so we can work towards making F1 more sustainable," Brown said.
F1 as a sport has committed to become carbon-neutral by 2030 and has made sustainability a key component of its long-term strategy.
But given that the activity involves internal combustion engines and that the automobiles are mostly built of carbon fibre, which is notoriously wasteful to make and hard to recycle, the aim poses significant problems.
F1's budget cap, which is set at $135m [£108.5m] this year, is one of several procedures added to the rulebook in recent years in an effort to narrow the field and increase competition in the race.
In new engines that will be required by 2026, F1 is already preparing to employ synthetic fuel that is carbon-neutral and completely sustainable.
