F1 Drivers Criticize FIA's Swearing Crackdown, Call for More Respect Transparency

Posted : 07 November 2024

Formula One drivers have expressed frustration over the FIA's recent clampdown on swearing, urging FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem to treat them with more respect and refrain from giving instructions through the media. The Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) issued a collective statement on Instagram, addressing the issue of 'driver misconduct.' This follows incidents such as Max Verstappen being penalized for inappropriate language at the Singapore Grand Prix and Charles Leclerc receiving a fine for swearing during the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The GPDA emphasized that drivers are professionals at the top of their sport and should not be penalized for casual bad language. They distinguished between using swearing to insult others and using it in a non-offensive way to describe a situation. The association also criticized Ben Sulayem for his own language and tone when addressing drivers, urging him to consider his approach, whether in public or private conversations.

Further, the statement raised concerns over other FIA regulations, such as rules on jewelry and fireproof undergarments, citing previous disputes involving Lewis Hamilton. The GPDA voiced dissatisfaction with fines being levied on drivers for what they deemed trivial matters and questioned the transparency of how these fines are allocated. They called for open dialogue and clarity on how the funds are spent for the benefit of the sport.

Mercedes driver George Russell, a GPDA director, proposed that the fines could be better utilized if they were directed toward improving the quality of race stewards. While no immediate response came from the FIA, the statement highlighted the ongoing tension between the governing body and drivers regarding rules enforcement and financial transparency in the sport.
