Estonian rally driver Ott Tänak wins Africa's first WRC Safari Rally Kenya stage
Posted : 23 June 2023
Estonian rally driver Ott Tänak began his pursuit of a first-ever victory in Africa with a strong performance on the opening stage of the 2023 WRC Safari Rally Kenya.
Tänak, the 2019 World Rally Champion, clinched the win on the thrilling 4.84-kilometer stage at Nairobi's Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
He edged out Frenchman Sebastien Ogier by a razor-thin margin of 0.1 seconds. The stage at Kasarani is traditionally a popular viewing spot for spectators based in Nairobi.
Defending Safari champion Kalle Rovanpera finished the stage 2.4 seconds behind the leader. It's worth noting that Rovanpera had a close call last year on the same stage when his GR Yaris Rally1 hybrid car nearly rolled over.
Tänak, who is aiming to end Toyota's dominant run in Kenya, emphasized the need for caution on the unpredictable Kenyan stages known for their challenging "fesh fesh" terrain.
The Great Rift Valley segment, spanning 1,190 kilometers, will feature prominently in the rally, although the threat of showers adds an element of unpredictability.
Tänak expressed the importance of avoiding mechanical setbacks in the demanding conditions and highlighted the need to deliver their best performance.
Recently, he had the opportunity to meet Kenyan long-distance running legend Eliud Kipchoge at the athlete's training camp in Kaptagat.
The Safari Rally's legendary figures from past decades were also present at the central Uhuru Park, where the Deputy President of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, flagged off the cars, marking the start of the rally and celebrating its 75th anniversary.
