Doha's extreme heat at Qatar Grand Prix raises concerns, prompts FIA action
Posted : 10 October 2023
The extreme heat at the Qatar Grand Prix in Doha raised concerns as several drivers suffered from dehydration and heat exhaustion during the race. This prompted the FIA to release a statement expressing their concern over the "extreme temperature and humidity" and the impact on driver well-being. Some drivers, including Esteban Ocon and George Russell, faced severe physical challenges during the race.
In response to the situation, the FIA has initiated an analysis to provide recommendations for future races in extreme weather conditions. They emphasized that the safety of the drivers is of utmost importance and that competitors should not be expected to compete under conditions that could jeopardize their health.
Measures under consideration include providing more guidance for competitors, researching modifications to improve cockpit airflow, and potentially adjusting the racing calendar to avoid extreme weather conditions.
The FIA also mentioned their commitment to closer cooperation between technical, safety, and medical departments to address these challenges effectively and ensure the well-being of drivers in extreme conditions.
