Charles Leclerc made a notable recovery in Friday's second free practice at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, topping the timesheet for Ferrari despite an early crash. Leclerc had initially damaged his car at Turn 15 during the opening practice, but after quick repairs by his team—including a novel protective setup to obscure the car's repairs—he returned to set a fastest lap of 1:43.484, narrowly edging out Red Bull's Sergio Perez by 0.006 seconds.
Leclerc's performance came after a challenging start to the day, with the Ferrari driver needing to pit early in the second practice session to replace a faulty power steering system. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton finished third for Mercedes, 0.066 seconds behind Leclerc, while Carlos Sainz secured fourth in the second Ferrari. McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Red Bull's Max Verstappen rounded out the top six, with Verstappen having been the quickest in the opening practice.
Lando Norris struggled in the second McLaren, finishing 17th after having to abort a lap due to an incident involving Pierre Gasly's Alpine. Gasly apologized, citing a battery problem as the cause. Lance Stroll placed seventh for Aston Martin, followed by Nico Hulkenberg in the Haas and George Russell in the second Mercedes, who had undergone an engine change between sessions. Ollie Bearman, filling in for the suspended Kevin Magnussen, finished tenth in the second Haas.
The session, which began under overcast skies, transitioned to warmer conditions that posed further challenges for drivers. Leclerc experienced steering issues and Carlos Sainz narrowly avoided hitting the barriers, while Verstappen encountered visibility problems as the sun set. Russell's session was marred by an unidentified issue after a mid-session engine change, adding to the day's difficulties.
