Charles Leclerc delivered a stunning victory for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix, securing a home win ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Ferrari opted for an audacious one-stop strategy for Leclerc, a gamble that paid off as he managed to leapfrog the McLarens, who used the more conventional two-stop strategy. Despite intense pressure from the McLarens in the final laps, Leclerc held his ground, finishing 2.6 seconds ahead and igniting wild celebrations among the tifosi in the grandstands.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull could only manage a sixth-place finish, which allowed Norris to reduce Verstappen’s championship lead by eight points, narrowing it to 62 with eight races remaining. Norris also clinched the fastest lap, contributing to McLaren's push in the constructors' championship, where they are now just eight points behind Red Bull.
McLaren’s race strategy initially looked promising as Piastri and Norris locked out the front row. Piastri’s move around the outside of the second chicane on the first lap saw him briefly take the lead, with Norris falling to third. Norris attempted to undercut Leclerc with an early pit stop, but Ferrari's strategy, including a subsequent pit stop for Piastri, allowed Leclerc to rejoin ahead of Norris.
As the race progressed, Norris struggled with tire wear and had to make a second pit stop, which ultimately hindered McLaren's chances. Piastri's later stop ensured he remained ahead of Leclerc, but the Ferrari driver’s decision to stick with a one-stop strategy proved successful. While Carlos Sainz fell to fourth, Leclerc's lead was sufficient to secure a memorable win. Reflecting on his victory, Leclerc described it as an “incredible feeling,” emphasizing the unique and emotional significance of winning at Monza, a venue he cherishes.
