After Friday's practice sessions at the Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc emerged as the standout performer, impressing both his rivals and observers alike. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen described Leclerc as being "miles ahead" of the competition, echoing sentiments shared by Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and his teammate George Russell. Leclerc's dominance at his home race was evident as he topped the time sheets in the second practice session, finishing 0.188 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
Despite Mercedes showing signs of improved competitiveness, with Hamilton expressing satisfaction with their performance on track, the focus remained on Leclerc's commanding pace. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso secured the third-fastest time, trailing Leclerc by 0.475 seconds, while Verstappen found himself in fourth position after encountering difficulties with his car's handling, describing it as "bouncing like a kangaroo" and even brushing the barriers at one point.
As the day unfolded, it became clear that Red Bull was encountering challenges with pace for the second consecutive race, with Verstappen struggling to match Leclerc's speed. Meanwhile, McLaren's Lando Norris and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz completed the top six, showcasing the competitive nature of the midfield battle.
While Hamilton acknowledged Mercedes' progress in terms of grip and handling, he emphasized the need to address race pace concerns, particularly regarding tyre degradation, indicating that there's still work to be done ahead of the race.
