Chantra leads way in Moto2™ practice at Motul Grand Prix of Japan
Posted : 29 September 2023
Chantra of IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia demonstrated his early prowess in the Moto2™ category during the Motul Grand Prix of Japan, showcasing a dominant performance in Practice 2 on Friday. Riding his Triumph-powered machine, the Thai rider had already asserted his superiority at Mobility Resort Motegi by being the fastest in the previous practice session.
Despite his mishap at the IndianOil Grand Prix of India, where he failed to complete the first lap, the 24-year-old was determined to make a strong comeback and clocked an impressive time of 1:50.396.
Aron Canet, representing Pons Wegow Los40, closely trailed Chantra with a time of 1:50.433, staging a late rally to salvage his day. Meanwhile, Sam Lowes from Elf Marc VDS Racing Team showcased a commendable recovery after a mishap in Practice 1.
With the potential for rain in the forecast for the morning's third and final practice session tomorrow, Practice 2 took on added significance and could prove pivotal for the upcoming qualifying rounds.
Despite his standing as the current Moto2™ Championship leader, Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Ajo found himself in fourth place, trailing Sam Lowes by a mere tenth of a second after the checkered flag.
On the other hand, his title rival, Tony Arbolino from Elf Marc VDS Racing Team, faces a precarious qualifying position, finishing 18th on the combined timing sheets with a time of 1:51.414.
Despite the uncertainty of weather conditions, the Moto2™ category remains highly competitive, with Practice 3 scheduled for 9:25 AM local time (GMT+9) tomorrow, followed by qualifying at 13:45.
