MotoGP championship leader Jorge Martin has secured a surprise move to Aprilia for the 2025 season, leaving his expected spot on the factory Ducati team open. This announcement comes amidst a flurry of rider market activity, with KTM also signing a rising Spanish star.
Aprilia confirmed Martin's signing on a multi-year deal, praising his talent and potential to contribute to their championship aspirations. The move comes as a surprise, as Martin was previously expected to replace Enea Bastianini at the factory Ducati team.
The catalyst for this shift seems to be six-time world champion Marc Marquez, who expressed his desire to join a factory team instead of replacing Martin at the Ducati satellite team Pramac. This freed up a spot at Aprilia, allowing them to secure Martin's services.
With the signing season in full swing, Ducati is expected to announce their rider alongside Francesco Bagnaia soon. Meanwhile, KTM has already secured the talent of 20-year-old Spanish prodigy Pedro Acosta, further shaking up the grid for next season.
