The 2024 season marks 75 years since the inception of the Formula One World Championship in 1950, an era that began with just seven races and crowned Italy’s Giuseppe Farina as its first champion. Grand Prix racing, however, predates this milestone by decades, with the earliest recorded race taking place in 1894.
Over the years, the sport evolved from open-road contests to organized circuits, with the first official Grand Prix believed to have been held in Le Mans in 1906. Although a manufacturers’ championship was introduced in the 1920s, it was only after World War II and the emergence of the FIA as the governing body that a structured competition took shape.
The inaugural 1950 season consisted of six European races in Britain, Monaco, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Italy, alongside the Indianapolis 500 in the United States, which remained largely separate due to minimal participation from European teams. Four major manufacturers—Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Maserati, and Talbot-Lago—competed against numerous privateers, while Mercedes did not join until 1954.
Farina, driving for Alfa Romeo, emerged victorious in the first-ever F1 race at Silverstone before securing the championship with another win in Monza. His triumph, achieved by a narrow margin over teammate Juan Manuel Fangio, made him the oldest first-time champion at the age of 43. Tragically, Farina later became the first F1 champion to pass away, dying in a road accident in 1966.
Safety was a significant concern in the early years, as demonstrated by the massive pile-up during the second race in Monaco when a wave flooded the track at Tabac Corner. Although drivers escaped serious injury, the race highlighted the dangers of the sport.
Many competitors from that season would later perish in racing accidents, including Alberto Ascari and Raymond Sommer. The 1950 grid also featured a colorful array of personalities, such as Prince Birabongse Bhanudej of Siam, who finished eighth in the championship, and Louis Chiron, who became the oldest F1 driver when he raced at 55 years old in 1955. Their presence, along with other unique figures, helped shape the foundation of modern Formula One.
