Carlos Sainz to Join Williams in Multi-Year Deal for 2025 Season

Posted : 30 July 2024

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz is set to join Williams next season after signing a multi-year deal, marking a significant acquisition for the team currently ranked ninth in the championship. The Spaniard will team up with Alex Albon, replacing the American racer Logan Sargeant. Sainz will depart Ferrari at the end of the year, making way for Mercedes' seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Williams, former champions, announced that the 29-year-old Sainz, a three-time race winner, has agreed to a two-year contract with options for extensions. Sainz expressed confidence in his new team, stating, "I am fully confident that Williams is the right place for me to continue my F1 journey, and I am extremely proud of joining such a historic and successful team. The ultimate goal of bringing Williams back to the front of the grid is a challenge that I embrace with excitement and positivity."

Sainz, who had also attracted interest from Sauber/Audi and Renault-owned Alpine, believes Williams has "all the right ingredients to make history again." His move to Williams increases the likelihood that Italian rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli will join Mercedes as Hamilton's replacement, as Mercedes can no longer place him at Williams for development, a strategy previously employed with George Russell.

Williams team boss James Vowles, who previously worked under Mercedes principal Toto Wolff, praised Sainz's addition, describing it as a strong statement of intent. Vowles highlighted Sainz's talent and race-winning pedigree, emphasizing the team's ambition and momentum.

He stated, "People should be in no doubt about our ambition and momentum as we continue our journey back to competitiveness – we are here, we are serious, and with Dorilton’s backing, we are investing in what it takes to return to the front of the grid."

Williams, once dominant in the 1980s and 1990s, have not won a world championship since Jacques Villeneuve's victory in 1997. Sainz's decision is seen as pivotal in the driver market, paving the way for other seat announcements to follow.
