Carlos Sainz Receives Three-Place Grid Penalty for Impeding Lewis Hamilton in Japanese GP Qualifying

Posted : 05 April 2025

Carlos Sainz, driving for Williams, was given a three-place grid penalty after he impeded Lewis Hamilton during Japanese Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday. Sainz had initially qualified in 12th, while Hamilton secured eighth, but the penalty dropped Sainz to 15th on the grid.

As a result, Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson, and Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda moved up to 12th, 13th, and 14th, respectively.

The Formula One stewards determined that Sainz had obstructed Hamilton at turn one after completing his fast lap, just as Hamilton was beginning his in the Q2 phase. The Briton was forced to go wide and off track to avoid an incident.

Sainz explained that he was unaware of Hamilton’s approach, citing no warning from his team and being caught by surprise due to the speed difference and the angle of his car.

In their ruling, the stewards noted that Sainz could not see Hamilton in his mirrors due to the approach speed and the positioning of his car. Despite the explanation, the stewards decided that the standard penalty of a grid drop should apply, regardless of whether the issue was caused by the driver or the team.

\As a result of the penalty, Sainz will start further down the grid, while his teammate Alex Albon will begin  Sunday's race in ninth position.
