Carlos Sainz: Ferrari's appeal for the Australian GP penalty was denied

Posted : 20 April 2023
To hear Ferrari's request for a right of review of the penalty that dropped Sainz from fourth to 12th place, the race officials met again on Tuesday.
They rejected the petition after determining that Ferrari had not introduced any significant and important new element.
Stewards stated that they had not modified their opinion that Sainz was solely to fault.

Following his collision with Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin, Sainz was assessed a five-second time penalty. The field was condensed as a result of several race interruptions, which caused him to fall farther than it would have otherwise.

While the race was still officially in progress, the stewards allegedly did not take into account three additional pieces of information that Ferrari said they possessed.

These were obtained from post-race interviews with other drivers and included remarks from other drivers as well as telemetry data from Sainz's vehicle.

One of these conversations involved Alonso, who declared that the punishment was severe.

Ferrari also referenced a 2014 Canadian Grand Prix incident in which the Force India team was given a second chance because driver Sergio Perez hadn't been contacted by stewards prior to a judgment being made.

The stewards disagreed, stating that the event in issue was "very different" because the drivers involved had been transported to the hospital and the stewards at the time were split on who was at fault—Perez or Felipe Massa of Williams.

Following Force India's request for a review, Perez's five-place grid penalty for the next race was upheld.
