British Grand Prix Day 2: Max Verstappen secures pole position
Posted : 08 July 2023
In a thrilling qualifying session at the British Grand Prix, Max Verstappen of Red Bull snatched pole position from McLaren's Lando Norris, much to the disappointment of the British fans. With three drivers yet to set their final times, Verstappen seized the opportunity and claimed pole by a margin of 0.241 seconds.
Norris led a strong McLaren showing, securing a two-three finish alongside his teammate Oscar Piastri. This marked McLaren's best qualifying performance in years, thanks in part to an upgrade that significantly improved their car's performance.
The McLarens outpaced the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who finished fourth and fifth respectively, as well as the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in sixth and seventh. Alex Albon of Williams took eighth place, followed by Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Pierre Gasly of Alpine to complete the top 10.
The qualifying session started on wet conditions but gradually dried up. Timing and delivering the perfect lap proved crucial for success.
Unfortunately for Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez, luck was not on his side. He failed to make it through the first session and will start from 16th position on the grid, extending his streak of missing out on the top 10 for the fifth consecutive race.
The qualifying session provided plenty of excitement and surprises, setting the stage for an intense and highly anticipated British Grand Prix.
