Brad Binder Sets Pace in Japan MotoGP Practice as Jorge Martin Finishes Third

Posted : 04 October 2024

South Africa's Brad Binder emerged as the fastest rider during Friday's practice session for the Japan MotoGP, setting a remarkable lap time of 1 minute and 43.436 seconds at the Motegi circuit. Binder, competing for Red Bull KTM, narrowly edged out Spain's six-time world champion, Marc Marquez, who finished in second place just 0.033 seconds behind. Championship leader Jorge Martin of Spain, currently holding a 21-point advantage over Francesco Bagnaia in the overall standings, clocked the third fastest time, falling 0.132 seconds short of Binder's impressive pace.

Defending world champion Bagnaia finished the session in seventh place, recording a time that was 0.318 seconds off the lead. Martin is on the hunt for his first MotoGP championship title after finishing as runner-up to Ducati’s Bagnaia last season. Meanwhile, Enea Bastianini, who ranks third in the overall championship standings, crashed midway through the hour-long session but managed to recover and secure the fifth-fastest time, only 0.169 seconds behind Binder.

The competitive practice session saw Martin initially dominating the time sheets until Binder pulled ahead with just minutes remaining. Marquez made a late attempt to take the top spot but ultimately fell short. Other notable riders, including Pedro Acosta, Maverick Vinales, Alex Marquez, Fabio Di Giannantonio, and Marco Bezzecchi, also made their presence felt by finishing within the top 10.

In a previous morning session, Bagnaia topped the timesheets, which were affected by heavy rain, finishing ahead of Martin. The top 10 fastest riders from practice automatically qualify for Saturday's second qualifying session, which determines the first four rows of the grid. This group will be joined by the two fastest riders from the initial qualifying session. The qualifying results will play a crucial role in shaping the starting positions for both the sprint race on Saturday and the main event GP on Sunday, where a maximum of 37 points are up for grabs.
