Bartosz Zmarzlik leads Speedway GP World Championship

Posted : 02 September 2023
Polish speedway sensation Bartosz Zmarzlik remains steadfastly focused on his racing duties as he inches closer to a potential fourth title ahead of tonight's FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain in Cardiff.

Zmarzlik currently leads the Speedway GP World Championship by a commanding 22-point margin, boasting 122 points as he arrives at Principality Stadium. His closest rival, Fredrik Lindgren, sits in second place with 100 points.

If Zmarzlik maintains this substantial lead, he could clinch the championship title at the DeluxeHomeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark in Vojens on September 16, provided he leaves with a lead of 21 points or more.

While there is a slim chance that Zmarzlik could secure the trophy in Cardiff if Lindgren fails to score at least two championship points, it would require an impressive 41-point lead over his nearest rival.

However, Zmarzlik remains unfazed by the mathematical permutations and remains singularly dedicated to what he does best – winning speedway races.

He stated, "It is never easy, but I never look at how many points I score. I am focused on my job all the time and the next round. We have three more rounds before the end of the season, and I am fully focused on this."

Zmarzlik's recent victory in Riga on August 12 marked his 22nd Speedway GP win, matching the career total of his idol and mentor, Tomasz Gollob. Tonight, he has the opportunity to equal the series record of 23 wins held by Australian legend Jason Crump.

Despite his impressive achievements, Zmarzlik remains humble and isn't preoccupied with rewriting the record books, saying, "I am very happy about this total. But I am never thinking about how many heats or GP rounds I have won. I love my job and I just do all that I can to get the best results."

Zmarzlik has an exceptional track record in Cardiff, reaching the final in all five of his previous visits. He clinched victory in 2018, finished second in 2022, third in 2016 and 2019, and took fourth place in 2017. This remarkable performance on the tight and technical Principality Stadium circuit is particularly impressive given his background of learning the sport on the fast and furious Polish tracks.

For Zmarzlik, the Cardiff event holds a special place, and he relishes competing here, stating, "I really like to come to Cardiff because I have many good memories from here. It is true that it is a really small track. But I feel good on these small tracks and also at the Cardiff GP. It’s always a special Grand Prix for me because of this stadium and the people. It’s amazing for speedway."
