Bagnaia Wins Austrian GP Sprint, Ties for Championship Lead as Marquez Crashes

Posted : 17 August 2024

Twice MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia secured victory in the Austrian Grand Prix sprint on Saturday, leveling his points total with Jorge Martin at the top of the world championship standings. Bagnaia’s win at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg brought him and Martin to 250 points each, setting up a crucial showdown for the main race on Sunday.

Bagnaia's aggressive start from the line contrasted with Martin's slow getaway, despite the latter having set a pole position lap record in qualifying. Martin, who initially led the race, was penalized with a long-lap penalty for cutting the chicane at turn two and ultimately finished second. His podium hopes took a further hit when six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez crashed out with four laps remaining.

After serving his penalty, Martin could not catch up to Bagnaia, who maintained a commanding lead throughout the remainder of the race. Bagnaia crossed the finish line well ahead of the competition, marking an impressive performance with a fastest lap time of 28.7, which was two-tenths faster than the pole position time from the previous year.

Aleix Espargaro finished third, earning his second sprint podium of the season. The 35-year-old rider, who announced his retirement at the end of the 2024 season, continues to deliver strong performances. Enea Bastianini, Jack Miller, Franco Morbidelli, Brad Binder, Marco Bezzecchi, and Pol Espargaro also earned points, contributing to a competitive field in the championship.\
