Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Sprint race pole position goes to Leclerc
Posted : 29 April 2023
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari won the new sprint shootout at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to secure his second pole position in as many days.
Despite colliding on his final lap of the condensed qualifying session, Leclerc was awarded the pole position for the sprint race on Saturday.
He defeated Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez of Red Bull, while George Russell of Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari finished fourth and sixth, respectively, behind Carlos Sainz.
Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin finished ninth due to DRS troubles.
Leclerc's collision may cause controversy since there is continuous discussion in Formula One over whether a driver who crashes during his last qualifying lap should be punished because it may have an impact on other drivers.
In this instance, Sainz, who was behind Leclerc at the time, was the sole driver whose safety was jeopardized by the collision. Everyone else was successful in finishing their lap.
"With the soft tyre was a little bit tricky. You get into Q3 and we haven't driven on these tyres since yesterday. It's not so long and the conditions were very different and the rears overheated a bit on the first lap." Leclerc said
"[On my final lap] I was behind compared to my first lap and was pushing a bit, but I overdid it in Turn Five."
He stated that he anticipated finding it hard to hold off the Red Bulls in the sprint.
