Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Sergio Perez closes on Max Verstappen, trophy in bag

With assistance from the safety car, Sergio Perez outperformed Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Verstappen and Perez engaged in a protracted, all-out duel after Perez was able to get the upper hand by conducting his pit stop beneath the safety car.

Verstappen was in Perez's crosshairs as he kept him at little over a second behind for an extended period of time before starting to pull away in the final laps. With his second victory of the year, Perez cut the Dutchman's lead in the title to six points.

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, who started the race from the pole position but was quickly passed by both Red Bulls at the start and by Verstappen again during the safety-car period, prevailed in a close duel against Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin for the last podium spot.

After a frustrating and challenging start to the season, it was a much-needed boost for Leclerc and Ferrari.

Carlos Sainz, a teammate of the Monegasque, finished fifth, holding off Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes, which slid out of the top 10 following the safety car.
