Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Prior to qualifying, Max Verstappen was fastest in practice

Prior to Friday's qualifying, Max Verstappen of Red Bull edged Charles Leclerc of Ferrari for fastest practice time at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Verstappen led by 0.037 seconds, followed by teammate Sergio Perez in third and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari in fourth.

For McLaren, Lando Norris finished fifth as the team debuted a significant vehicle update.

Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Fernando Alonso of the Aston Martin did not perform runs on the quickest "soft" tyre.
Russell was the slowest, followed by Hamilton (11) and Alonso (8th).

Alpine had a miserable session. Early in the practice, teammate Pierre Gasly experienced a serious fire, while Esteban Ocon was forced to halt due to what the team would later describe as only a "issue at the back of the car."

The first weekend of a new 'sprint' racing format is now underway.

A second qualifying session will take place on Saturday to establish the grid for the 'sprint' race that will take place later that day. Qualifying will determine the starting lineup for the major grand prix on Sunday.

It was a session full with mishaps.
