Azerbaijan Grand Prix: After the "boring" Baku race, Toto Wolff issued a caution
Posted : 02 May 2023
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday, according to Toto Wolff, was "boring," and Formula 1 has to consider what to do about it.
"It was not a thriller," the Mercedes team principal said.
"No overtaking, even with a big pace difference, made it not great entertainment.
"Even if you are within 0.2secs, it is nearly impossible to overtake unless the other driver makes a mistake."
Wolff refrained, though, from blaming the 2022 amendments to the regulations.
"After a race weekend like this, we mustn't talk it down overall and say it is the wrong direction and we need to change completely," he said.
"It is more about asking why wasn't it entertaining, and revisit it.
"We need to look at how we can avoid a boring race."
It added a second qualifying round that determined the starting lineup for the sprint, a smaller race on Saturday that has been completely isolated from the major grand prix. Previously, the finish of the sprint determined the starting order for the main event.
