Audi has adjusted its expectations for its Formula 1 debut in 2026, setting a more measured timeline for success. Originally aiming to win races within three years, the German car manufacturer has now "recalibrated" its goals, acknowledging that it will be a multi-year journey, according to CEO Gernot Dollner. The company is still determining the extent of its ambition for the project.
Dollner emphasized that while Audi reassessed its F1 plans last year, the idea of withdrawing from the sport was never on the table. He affirmed that the decision to enter Formula 1 was carefully considered over two and a half years ago, and after a thorough evaluation, Audi remains committed to the project. Dollner believes that F1 aligns well with Audi's broader strategy, even though the challenge is substantial and will require time.
Audi's approach involves a phased takeover of Sauber, with the company assuming full responsibility for the team sooner than initially planned. This move is part of a forward-looking management strategy, as Audi prepares to make its mark in the pinnacle of motorsports.
