Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes' latest Formula 1 recruit, has dismissed the notion that he is merely a replacement for Lewis Hamilton. The 18-year-old Italian was chosen to debut for the team following Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari in 2025.
While Antonelli acknowledges the significance of his opportunity, he insists he is focused on forging his own identity in the sport. He also expressed gratitude for the trust Mercedes has placed in him, while recognizing the responsibility that comes with representing a top team.
Taking over a seat once occupied by the most successful driver in F1 history could be overwhelming, but Antonelli appears unfazed. His maturity, a trait his teammate George Russell has also praised, has been evident as he prepares for the challenge ahead.
Antonelli is determined to build a solid foundation in his debut season, emphasizing consistency over recklessness. "I really want to start with a nice rhythm and build from there," he explained.
"And what I don’t want to do is make a big mistake. Because when you do a big mistake, you do a few steps back, and then to recover it takes a little time."
Antonelli's rise to Formula 1 has been meteoric. He has long been considered one of motorsport’s brightest prospects, having joined Mercedes' junior program at just 11 years old. His rapid ascent through the ranks saw him promoted to Formula 1 after only one season in Formula 2, an uncommon feat in modern racing.
Those who have worked with him speak highly of his natural talent, hinting that he could be the sport’s next big star. Despite the high expectations surrounding him, Antonelli remains focused on making the most of his opportunity.
Even he admits to being surprised by how quickly his dream has become a reality. Reflecting on his journey, he said, "If you had asked me this four years ago, I would have said, ‘this is crazy, not happening.’ Maybe a bit later.
Not even four years ago, three and a half years ago, I was still in karting." Though his rise has been swift, Antonelli is embracing the challenge ahead and is eager to prove himself on one of the biggest stages in motorsport.
