Alpine Signs Franco Colapinto as Reserve, Putting Pressure on Jack Doohan

The Alpine Formula One team has added pressure on Australian rookie Jack Doohan by signing Argentine Franco Colapinto as a reserve driver, ready to step in if Doohan falls short of performance expectations. Colapinto, 21, has been impressive despite some crashes last year and a mid-season switch to Williams, where he replaced Logan Sargeant. Alpine confirmed that the Argentine driver has signed a multi-year deal, signaling the team's interest in securing young talent for the future.

 

The addition of Colapinto has raised speculation about Doohan's future with the team. The 21-year-old, who made his race debut in Abu Dhabi last month, has been the reserve driver before being promoted to a race seat after the departure of French driver Esteban Ocon. Alpine's executive advisor, Flavio Briatore, praised Colapinto's rookie performances and highlighted the team's commitment to nurturing young drivers for long-term success, which may be unsettling for Doohan's morale.

 

In addition to Colapinto, Alpine has also brought in Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa and young Estonian F2 driver Paul Aron to their reserve list, strengthening their pool of future talents. Briatore had previously indicated that Doohan would begin the year alongside Pierre Gasly, but his comments hinted at the possibility of changes as the season progresses, intensifying doubts about Doohan's stability in the team.

 

Colapinto's potential move to Formula One has also been endorsed by Williams team principal James Vowles, who believes the agreement with Alpine provides the Argentine with the best opportunity to secure a race seat for 2025 or 2026. With the F1 season set to kick off at Doohan's home Australian Grand Prix on March 16, the pressure is on the rookie to deliver strong performances and secure his place in the team.
