After Three Red Lights, Max Verstappen Wins the Postponed Australian GP
Posted : 16 April 2023
After a restart that was impacted by an accident, the tumultuous and contentious Australian Grand Prix was won by Max Verstappen.
Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes followed the Red Bull driver home to establish the podium.
That was true even though Alonso lost position after being knocked into a spin at a restart with two laps remaining.
The vehicles then had to complete a final lap behind the safety car. Per FIA regulations, the finishing positions were taken from the most recent restart.
In an effort to stir up even more controversy, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz was given a five-second time penalty for tagging Alonso's vehicle at the first corner, which resulted in the crucial collision and dropped the Spaniard from fourth to 12th and out of the points.
Sainz, who was visibly upset, termed the choice as "unacceptable," adding, "They need to wait and talk to me after the race. The punishment is obviously not warranted. It's too harsh."
The Alpine drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon were the other major losers as a result of the decisions made by the officials; they started fifth and tenth on the last restart, but collided with each other and withdrew at the second corner.
There will be debate about whether F1 is putting showbusiness over sport in light of the extraordinary happenings.
As the final two red flags were raised to try to ensure the grand prix would finish under racing conditions, there is a direct correlation between these events and the final laps of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021, when officials made mistakes that altered the outcome of the world championship battle between Verstappen and Hamilton.
The FIA decided that a lap had occurred but that, aside from the incident between the Alpines, the most of the events during it had no bearing.
Verstappen's victory increased his championship lead to 15 points, while Sergio Perez's fifth-place finish after the Mexican began from the back helped as well.
