Wayne Rooney Leaves Plymouth Argyle After Seven-Month Tenure

Posted : 01 January 2025

Plymouth Argyle have announced the departure of head coach Wayne Rooney after just over seven months in charge, following a mutual agreement. Rooney, who signed a three-year contract in May to replace Ian Foster, struggled to produce results, with the team failing to secure an away win this season. Plymouth currently sit at the bottom of the Championship table with 18 points from 23 games, four points behind the safety zone.

Rooney's tenure included 25 matches across all competitions, but his departure adds to a challenging year, as he was also dismissed as Birmingham City head coach in January. Despite the setbacks, Rooney expressed his gratitude to Plymouth, saying the club will always hold a special place in his heart and that he will continue to follow their progress. In the interim, first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will oversee the team for their upcoming match against Bristol City.

The former Manchester United and England star has had a varied managerial career, with stints at Derby County and MLS side DC United before his roles in the Championship. Rooney was initially appointed as Birmingham’s manager in late 2023, but his tenure ended after the club dropped from sixth to 20th in the league standings.
