US Ryder Cup players to receive $200,000 participation stipend

Posted : 17 December 2024

The PGA of America has announced that for the first time, US golfers will be compensated for playing in the Ryder Cup. The new program, introduced on Monday, offers each team member a $200,000 stipend, as well as $300,000 to donate to charities of their choice. This change will be implemented starting with the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.

Since the 1999 Ryder Cup at Brookline, players have received a $200,000 sum to distribute to charities, but the new measure adds an additional stipend. According to the PGA of America, the board of directors voted for this program to enhance the players' recognition for their contributions to the tournament over the years.

Although the players had not requested compensation, the topic of pay for participation has caused some tension within the US team in previous Ryder Cups. This issue had reportedly been a point of discussion before, but the PGA of America emphasized that the stipend was introduced "out of respect for the players."

Don Rea, the president of the PGA of America, mentioned in a letter to past Ryder Cup captains that the stipend would be separate from any expenses players incur during the event. Rea stated that it was intended as recognition of the players' long-standing commitment to the Ryder Cup.

When news of the stipend broke, European Ryder Cup stars Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy responded, stating that they did not require financial incentives to give their best in the competition. Rose expressed that European players play for the honor of the badge and the European Tour, emphasizing the emotional value of the event.

The US team will face Europe at Bethpage Black, where Europe will defend the title they won in Italy in 2023. This edition will mark Europe's attempt to secure their first Ryder Cup victory on US soil since their dramatic win in the 2012 “Miracle at Medinah.”

This new stipend program reflects the PGA of America's ongoing efforts to elevate the prestige of the Ryder Cup while also recognizing the commitment and passion of the players who participate in the tournament.
